Residents of Bilbao were surprised by the appearance of a submerged sculpture of a girl’s head near the Basque city’s central Zubi Zuri bridge, footage filmed on Tuesday shows.
Named ‘Bihar’ (‘Tomorrow’ in Basque), the more than two-metre sculpture is uncovered as the tide goes out, but once it rises, around midday local time, the girl’s head gradually begins to be covered by water.
“I’m a bit shocked by the serene countenance she has with regard to the idea that she is drowning and she is getting covered more and more by the water, depending on the tide I imagine it will change,” said a passer-by
“It’s spectacular, it’s a bit scary; now the tide is a bit low but when it rises and I suppose you’ll see it there, it’s a bit scary. It’s so realistic that it looks like it’s drowning,” commented one woman.
The sculpture is part of the BBK banking foundation’s campaign and was commissioned from Mexican artist Ruben Orozco, known for his hyperrealist work and who has previously done work for the Basque organisation.
