Egypt’s ancient King Khufu’s boat, also known as the ‘Boat of Sun,’ was moved on Saturday to its new location at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, set to open this year near the pyramids.

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities said in a statement released on Saturday that it has moved the intact boat, which dates back 4,600 years ago.

The statement also read “after crossing the streets of Giza on a smart wagon, King Khufu’s first boat – discovered in 1954 in the southern corner of the Great Pyramid - completed its long journey to the Grand Egyptian Museum.”

In ancient Egypt, the solar boats were buried in pits next to the royal burial chambers, in the belief that they will transport them to the afterlife.

The Egyptian government hopes that the inauguration of the Grand Museum, along with other prominent discoveries made during the last few years, may revive the stumbling tourism sector, which accounts for 15 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.
