Dr. Zahi Hawass, Egyptologist, and Dr. Sahar Saleem, Professor of Radiology at Cairo University and international expert in radiology of antiquities, unveiled the contents of the mummy of King Amenhotep l, as seen on Thursday in Agouza, in the Giza Governorate, north of Cairo.
Thanks to the use of x-ray technology, CT (computed tomography) scanning, as well as advanced computer software programs, Saleem and Hawass were able to digitally unwrap the mummy of Amenhotep I in a safe, non-invasive method without the need to touch the mummy or damage it.
“We found out that the face of Amenhotep I is exactly similar to the face of his father Ahmose,” said Dr. Hawass, adding, “Another thing we found out was that the king died at the age of 35, and this is early. We did not find any diseases that the king suffered.”
The non-invasive research also allowed scientists to discover that the king was wearing numerous amulets between the wrappings and the body. In addition, they found out that the king was the first ruler from the New Kingdom to be mummified with his forearms crossed with the ‘Osiris’ position, which following kings also used.
So far the team has carried out CT scans on 40 royal mummies and plans to continue the work on other royal mummies as well as common people from the period.
King Amenhotep I was the son of King Ahmose I, conqueror of the Hyksos and founder of the New Kingdom of ancient Egyptian civilisation. Amenhotep I took the throne of Egypt after his father, Ahmose I; he ruled the country for twenty-one years (from 1525 to 1504 BC in the 18th dynasty).
The mummy of King Amenhotep I was found in 1881 in the Royal cache at Deir-el Bahri in Luxor, where the priests of the twenty-first dynasty reburied and hid the mummies of many previous Kings and Queens to protect them from the recurrent tomb theft.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Zahi Hawass, Egyptologist: “Through the Egyptian mummies project, that we scanned and studied many mummies especially the mummies of the New Kingdom and we revealed many important secrets such as we discovered the mummy of Hatshepsut and how special the third was murdered and many important studies we did; but the most recent one that I did with Dr. Sahar Seleem professor of radiology at Cairo University, we studied the mummy of Amenhotep I. We know that the mummy of Amenhotep I is the only mummy of the new kingdom mummies that is really completed, the face has a mask and [it is] completely covered with linen.”
SOT, Zahi Hawass, Egyptologist: “We never know the face of Amenhotep I, with the CT-scan and new technology that we used, without disturbing the mummy, we understood for the first time how the face looked like, we could see the face without disturbing the mummy, without damaging the mummy, and we found out that the face of Amenhotep I is exactly similar to the face of his father ‘Ahmose,’ the one who dismissed the Hyksos from Egypt.”
SOT, Zahi Hawass, Egyptologist: “And this was a very important discovery, the second thing that we know from studies all New Kingdom’s mummies, they always take the brains out except in the mummy of Amenhotep I, the brain is still there. And another thing we found was that the king died at the age of 35, and this is early, we did not find any diseases that the king suffered. Also, we found out that the mummy has the Osiris style of the position, and he is the first king that really mummified in that position and after that, all the kings of the New Kingdom did follow that position.”
SOT, Zahi Hawass, Egyptologist: “Also, we found out inside many amulets and we found a building content about 50 pieces of Gold but the discovery of the amulets inside proves that the prise of dynasty 21st and 22nd they did not want to steal the mummies, they saved the mummies, we have really to thank them; without them, all these mummies would be completely damaged.”
SOT, Zahi Hawass, Egyptologist: “CT0-scan and DNA can reveal many important secrets about mummies of all kingdoms and now, for the first time, we found out the secret of the mummy of king Amenhotep I, the first that dated back to the New Kingdom, and is the second king of dynasty 18, about 3,000 years ago.”
