Thousands of protesters marched against President Nayib Bukele in San Salvador on Wednesday, marking the 200th anniversary of the country’s independence. Protesters accused Bukele of abuse of power and criticised his government’s decision to make the cryptocurrency Bitcoin legal tender in the country.
Dark smoke could be seen rising from a fire burning on the street, next to where the crowds were marching.
Several protesters carried signs and banners with messages such as, ‘Nayib Bukele corrupted,’ and ‘F**k Bukule and his Bitcoin.’
The central American country is the first country worldwide to have introduced Bitcoin as an official currency on September 7, 2021. The state provided each citizen with a credit of 30 dollars which can be downloaded an ATM through the virtual wallet ‘Chivo,’ which has often been down for maintenance. Bukele’s administration has secured itself 400 bitcoins (€17.6 million, $20,8 million).
