‘Elderly Asian Woman Attacked in San Francisco Amid Rise in Asian Hate Crimes’

Asian communities in the US are on edge after facing increasingly violent attacks this year.

On Wednesday, an elderly Asian woman fought back against a man who punched her in San Francisco.

Xiao Zhen Zie was waiting to cross a street when a man she didn’t know hit her without warning.

Police said the suspect, Steven Jenkins, assaulted an 83-year-old Asian man in the same area shortly before he attacked Zie.

Investigators are trying to determine if racial bias was a factor in the assaults.

Police have increased patrols in the city’s Asian neighbourhoods, following the deadly shootings in Georgia that left eight people dead.

The Asian American community has been the target of more hate crimes since the Covid pandemic began.

The UN issued a report in late 2020 detailing an “alarming level” of racially-motivated violence against Asian Americans.
