Senior gamers were spotted with led lighted keyboards and joysticks at the ISR e-sport facility, the first gaming facility in Kobe exclusive for people 60-years-old and over, as seen on Thursday.

The initiative started in July 2020 to create a safe and controlled environment for seniors to venture into the world of gaming and prevent isolation, according to ISR owner Koji Nashimoto.

“This facility is only for people who are 60 years old or older and was established to help people create a sense of purpose in life after retirement, to prevent isolation, and to create a sense of community along the way,” he said.

Each session consists of 90 minutes of gaming and 30 minutes of teatime, offering seniors time to mingle.

“In the end, I thought e-sports was for young people, but I realised that it is a sport that even we seniors can do. That’s why I’m doing it, thinking that I can do something like this no matter how old I am,” explained Tamae Hitomi, a 63-year-old gamer.

Instructors present at the facility offer basic instructions to the gamers, such as mouse and keyboard controls, but do not overload them with new techniques so they can enjoy a stress-free process while gaming.

SOT, Koji Nashimoto, Owner of ISR Personnel LLC (Japanese): “This facility is only for people who are 60 years old or older, and was established to help people create a sense of purpose in life after retirement, to prevent isolation, and to create a sense of community along the way.”

SOT, Ken’ichi Uchiyama, 63-yr-old gamer (Japanese): “Communication is interesting. I can communicate with people I don’t know, and I can connect with people all over the world online. Of course, I don’t talk if they are not my friends. I think it’s interesting to help each other out.”

SOT, Tamae Hitomi, 63-year-old gamer (Japanese): “It’s like I can be younger. A little younger. I feel like I’m getting my youth back, or becoming a child again.”

SOT, Yuriko Takeda, 70-year-old gamer (Japanese): “Each time there is a different type of game, like fishing, or a game with lots of flowers, and you have to score points with the flowers. They introduce completely different games like that, so it’s a good way to train your brain. I can come here every month with the intention of enjoying a new game, even if it’s just a little new, so I never get bored because it’s fresh.”

SOT, Koji Nashimoto, Owner of ISR Personnel LLC (Japanese): “By playing games, people can use their fingertips and their brains, and we hope that this will help prevent dementia and frailty.”
