Estonia: Country ranks worst in EU for most COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents

Estonia became the European country with the highest number of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday, local media reported.

Peeter Jarvelaid, a professor at the University of Tallinn, said the virus is spreading fast in the county because of conflicting information from authorities and a lack of communication between state authorities and higher-level governments.

“We still do not quite understand what ‘pandemic’ means and how to reach every person. I would say that in Estonia we should have turned to local governments earlier,” Jarvelaid stated.

He also said that people “have to stop playing democracy,” because they can’t understand “what is danger in a pandemic situation.”

Estonia currently has the highest, “red” threat level for the spread of the coronavirus in Europe.

Today we can already draw some conclusions that, I think, we still do not quite understand what ‘pandemic’ means and how to reach every person. I would say that in Estonia we should have turned to local governments earlier because if it is not quite clear what the local government is doing, what the state is doing, it could turn out that people are not covered.”

But what are responsibilities, what is danger in a pandemic situation, they don’t quite understand.”

One day they say that children don’t get sick or get sick very easily, the next they say it’s only dangerous for old people. It is dangerous for everybody. And yet, I think these early days are already showing how people are going to be tested. Here we can see: car by car. And now the holidays are over, and not only schools are testing, and parents bring their children to be vaccinated. Perhaps the coming week will show what progress will be made. The fact that people already come to be tested so actively shows that they will probably come to be vaccinated as well.”
