Ethiopia’s Oromo ethnic group celebrated Irreecha, a thanksgiving holiday marking the end of the winter, in Addis Ababa on Saturday.
Celebrated in the country’s capital for the third time, the annual festivity usually held in the town of Bishoftu, commemorates the end of the rainy season, welcoming the harvest season.
Huge crowds, estimated in the millions, gather each year in Bishoftu, 40 kilometres southeast of Ethiopia, dressed in traditional costumes to witness the religious rituals that take place on the shores of the lake.
The presence of security forces during the festival was high in the wake of the instability in the country due to the ongoing conflict in northern Ethiopia.
SOT, Thomas, Festival attendee from Czech Republic: “I am very excited because I am embracing my girlfriend’s culture, so it is a very exciting day for us “
SOT, Ayantu, Festival attendee (Amharic): “I am very happy today, I spent my time with my friends and I’m very much happy.”
SOT, Masud Kemal, Festival attendee from Addis Ababa (Amharic): “I am very very happy because last year because of COVID-19 we were not celebrating our Irreechaa but this year we celebrate thanks to God.”
SOT, Belay Mekonen, Orthodox Church priest (Amharic): “Irreechaa means forgive for others, peace, unity and love.”
