Ursula Wanecki, who has made numerous appearances as German Chancellor Angela Merkel due to her uncanny likeness to the German leader, is preparing for her retirement as the real Merkel’s time in office winds down. Wanecki discussed her career as a doppelganger at her home in Attendorn, on Friday.
“My career as a double of our Chancellor started very slowly. In reality it was my grandson who discovered me. He said ‘Mama look, grandmother is on TV’,” she recalled. “Then came the Attendorn carnival, and I had the idea to dress up as the Chancellor. I bought a green jacket, fabric trousers. I made a sign saying ‘Chancellor’s Office’. And that is how I showed up. And everybody liked that.”
Wanecki went on to send photos to an advertising agency at the urging of her family, landing her jobs encouraging German citizens to vote, among other appearances and shoots impersonating the chancellor. Occasionally, bystanders would not only mistake her for the real Merkel, but would not believe her when she denied being Germany’s chancellor.
“Once, while filming in Berlin, I was handed a petition asking me to change something. I explained that we were just filming and that I am not the chancellor. But they were so irritated and would not believe that I was not the chancellor and they would not take it, that it was just a shoot,” she said
As Merkel is not running in the upcoming elections set to take place in September, Wanecki is looking forward to hanging up her colourful blazers.
“It was an adventure, but I am glad that th is adventure is ending, and that I could be able to do what I was waiting for a long time, for example, a big trip to the Baltic sea, or to travel in our country for a longer period of time,” she said. “I do hope that our chancellor will also be able to do so.”

SOT, Ursula Wanecki, Angela Merkel doppelganger (German): “My career as a double of our Chancellor started very slowly. In reality it was my grandson who discovered me. He said ‘Mama look, grandmother is on TV’. And also on birthdays and weddings people would talk to me about my likeness to our Chancellor. They wanted a picture with me. And then came the Attendorn carnival, and I had the idea to dress up as the Chancellor. I bought a green jacket, fabric trousers. I made a sign saying ‘Chancellor’s Office’. And that is how I showed up. And everybody liked that.”

SOT, Ursula Wanecki, Angela Merkel doppelganger (German): “My colleagues and acquaintances convinced me to send my photos to an advertising agency, and I got very lucky at that time, as the Chancellor was on tour through Germany and was on an election campaign. Studios in Cologne were looking for a double to convince young people to vote. And the agency called me up and I agreed. I travelled to Cologne and filmed my first appearance ‘Date with the Chancellor’.”

SOT, Ursula Wanecki, Angela Merkel doppelganger (German): “It happens often that people on the street believe I am the chancellor. Soon, we had a shoot in Berlin. I was with four bodyguards and a black limousine, and we interviewed many people. They really believed I was the chancellor.”

SOT, Ursula Wanecki, Angela Merkel doppelganger (German): “Actually once, while filming in Berlin, I was handed a petition asking me to change something. I explained that we were just filming and that I am not the chancellor. But they were so irritated and would not believe that I was not the chancellor and they would not take it, that it was just a shoot.”

SOT, Ursula Wanecki, Angela Merkel doppelganger (German): “I only met Mrs Merkel once, in Olpe where she was on an election campaign through Germany. There I was very near her. But I didn’t speak to Mrs Merkel. One of my greatest wishes would be to meet once personally Mrs Merkel.”

SOT, Ursula Wanecki, Angela Merkel doppelganger (German): “This year I will turn 65 and I wanted to apply for my pension, as it was quite stressful. It was an adventure, but I am glad that this adventure is ending, and that I could be able to do what I was waiting for a long time, for example, a big trip to the Baltic sea, or to travel in our country for a longer period of time. That is what I intend to do, and I do hope that our chancellor will also be able to do so.”

SOT, Ursula Wanecki, Angela Merkel doppelganger (German): “These are all my colorful blazers. Mrs Merkel is always the centre of attention, when she is pictured with many men in black suits. She always wears very beautiful blazers, and so as a woman she is always the centre of attention. I believe this is the strength of Mrs Merkel, that she chose such a wardrobe.”
