Fake friends! Fake Family! Fake partners! You can get all of those in Japan, where rent-a-friend agencies have exploded as a remedy to alienation and isolation. Helping people look less alone than they really are. So if someone needs a person to pretend to be their boyfriend, that’s covered. Or they’ll snap Instagram photos with total strangers they bought to make it look like they have friends. Right they even pay people to show up at their funeral and cry, making them look more popular than they really were.
