A team of two female Emirati engineers joined by a Spanish colleague developed a foldable water bottle made of environment-friendly materials that helps detecting bacteria in water, as filmed in Masdar City in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
“Our story begins when the ecothon challenge started where we had to design a solution to solve the issue of excessive plastic waste, so myself and my colleagues Ruwayya and Angela did our research and we observed people on this, and through our observation, we noticed that many people prefer single-use plastic over re-usable bottles due to its convenience as re-usable bottles were heavy, take a lot of space and they had hygienic concerns towards it,” said Amina Al-Ali, the project co-founder.
“Through our research findings, we came up with our initial idea which is re-on-the-go bottles, which is designed to be foldable and compressible to fit our pockets and purses. It mainly targets people on the go, such as athletes, students and travellers to help solve size and weight issues. It is designed to be made of PAT material to make it re-usable with sensors on the cap to help detect bacteria to solve the hygiene issues, ” she added.
The procut won Ecothon Innovation Challenge competition organised by sustainability experts in Masdar City, in cooperation with Nestlé, Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an.
Masdar City is a sustainable residential community established in Abu Dhabi. It hosts initiatives that aim at finding solutions for several issues including energy security, environmental changes, ways to develop human experience in the field of renewable energy and sustainable development.
