Children and parents tried a new human-powered Ferris wheel made by amusement park equipment manufacturer Ruoyu Wei at his factory in Xuchang on Friday.

Unlike the large, electrically powered attractions he used to make, the human-powered Ferris wheel was smaller but designed to be more fun for passengers because both child and parent had to pay constant attention and work together and could not be distracted by smartphones, for instance. Parents and children had to pedal or turn the crank to provide power that lifted them into the air, so as the trolley slowly moves up and down, parents could talk directly to their children and have more interactions than just staring at a screen together.

Mr Wei, who is a father himself, has named this attraction ‘Step On the World’ and designed it with safety features so that it is suitable for children as young as 1 to 12 years old. Another of Wei’s inventions, a human-powered roller coaster, went viral on Chinese social media earlier in 2021.
