What do you think? Why are there so many natural disasters lately? Is it a Haarp or is it an omen of the second coming of Jesus Christ? Perhaps science has already given the answer and this is global warming? Please write your version in the comments below the video! Enjoy watching.
A heated debate, sometimes to the point of brawls, over the issue of climate change has split the council of the Australian city of Lismore after the floods. While some figure out what to print in the headlines, the rest are forced to suffer the consequences of the flood while waiting for help.
The disaster-ravaged city is still only in the early stages of recovery from an unprecedented anomalous flood that destroyed thousands of homes and businesses and brought Lismore to its knees.
At a late meeting on Tuesday, the Lismore Council offered to express gratitude to the volunteers and the community for their immediate response and clean-up efforts.
It included a line saying the council “recognizes that we are likely to face further disasters of this nature as climate change continues to escalate.” The words “climate change” provoked a reaction from four advisers, led by independent adviser Big Rob, who attempted to remove the link and replace it with a line that reads: “We will definitely face further disasters of this kind.”
“This proposal was about gratitude to the people, and not about the political attitude towards climate change,” one of the advisers said.
Rob was backed by three other advisors, including Andrew Gordon, who said adding a climate change reference to the community thank you statement was “delusional as hell.” An attempt to remove the mention of climate change failed. But it offended other council members, including Green councilor Adam Gies, who first suggested adding a reference to climate change.
“They tried to word it in a way that wasn’t politicized,” Guise said. “But that’s the whole point of climate change, it’s not politics, it’s science.”
The dispute comes amid further disagreement within the council over a decision to suspend a key committee working to improve Lismore’s flood relief efforts.
At 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, the council decided to suspend the floodplain committee to await more information from the CSIRO, which has been awarded $10 million to study flood relief efforts in the region.
But adviser Vanessa Ekins, who chairs the committee, warned that it could take months. She said the committee’s suspension was a “very dangerous ground” and would not look good to the people of Lismore. She called the decision “absolutely outrageous.”
Others were furious that community members were fired from the committee so soon after the flood.
“We had community members on the committee with five years of experience, knowledge and understanding of how to deal with flood issues,” said adviser Ellie Bird. “I don’t support discarding all this experience.”
It turns out that the politics and publicity of problems now contradict each other even in civilized countries.
