Parts of the city of Montevideo were literally under water due to unprecedented heavy rains that caused damage to various houses and traffic chaos, as well as power outages that reportedly affected about 12,000 users. The storm reached its peak around 6 a.m., although social media users reported throughout the night that the situation in different areas was becoming critical. Sources from the Uruguayan meteorological agency Inumet, cited by local media, unofficially reported that more than 100 millimeters of rain fell in Montevideo in two hours. In two hours, Montevideo was reported to have experienced what would normally take a full month. Some areas of the department of Canelones also recorded between 100 and 120 millimeters of rain, while Montevideo, especially in the city center and also in the Malvina area, received up to 100 millimeters of rain. Montevideo City Council said relief teams are working overtime to restore normal life as soon as possible. “Due to the intense rains that have been recorded in recent hours, flooding has been detected in different parts of the city. Our crews have been working since dawn, and we have put all our resources to solve an unprecedented problem, ”the Montevideo City Hall said on Twitter.
