Violent storms with damaging winds of up to 100kph have killed at least three in Melbourne.

One of the victims, a four-year-old boy, was struck by a falling tree while on a walk with his father.

The boy was taken to hospital but died later on Thursday evening.

A 59-year-old man was killed when a falling tree crushed the car he was driving.

A pickup truck was hit by another tree on a highway, killing a 36-year-old female passenger.
