Dozens of Parisians took part in a Global Day of Action for Climate Justice rally organised by the COP26 Coalition on Saturday.
The faces of a number of world leaders were displayed on banners as part of a call to action made by activists. An Olympic logo was also covered up with a banner warning about the dangerous consequences of inaction by world leaders at COP26.
“What worries me about the attitudes of the leaders is that they may have an awareness, they all speak, they make fine speeches, they tell us that the climate is very important, but when it is about getting to action, when it comes to taking concrete measures, to be really active and well, there is no result”, explained, Benoit, an activist.
“There really isn’t, that’s why we are here today, as citizens, asking the leaders: Act, act now because it is almost too late,” added Benoit.
A number of world leaders are currently in Glasgow for the COP26 climate summit, to negotiate voluntary non-binding agreements meant to address climate change.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Benoit, Activist (French): “What worries me about the attitudes of the leaders is that they may have an awareness, they all speak, they make fine speeches, they tell us that the climate is very important, but when it is about getting to action, when it comes to taking concrete measures, to be really active and well, there is no result. There really isn’t, that’s why we are here today, as citizens, asking the leaders: Act, act now because it is almost too late.”
SOT, Louise, Protester (French): “We must think at the global level, at the level of the people, listen to the young people, who proclaim the importance of climate justice on a daily basis. Clearly the French government does not listen to them. We have seen it with the Citizen’s Convention for the Climate that Macron had put in place and finally it was in the wind! There was no follow-up on that.”
SOT, Anaelle, Protester (French): “My climate gesture? Obviously, to sort my waste, not to eat meat, or only a little bit, to favor public transport instead of the car, to prefer the train to the plane, all these kinds of things in fact, the small daily gestures.”
SOT, Norbert, Protester (French): “In my personal life, I travel by bicycle, I eat very little meat, I no longer take the plane…”
Passerby (French): “You don’t?”
Norbert, Protester (French): “Yes and we have opened a ‘Repair Cafe’ in my city to save as many objects as possible, repairing them as to avoid throwing them away.”
