The European Commission discussed proposed measures to deal with the current migrant crisis on the Belarus border in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

“By now we all agree, that what has been happening in our eastern and external border is not a migration crisis, it is a particularly cruel and shameless hybrid threat, it is a state-sponsored instrumentalisation of thousands of migrants by the last dictator of Europe for political purposes, it is unacceptable and we must put an end to it,” European Commission Vice-President, Margaritis Schinas said.

“We responded to Belarus flouting of international norms with a harsh set of sanctions that we continue to escalate, we have suspended Belarus visa facilitation agreement, we have proposed a new legal framework that will put also to your houses for approval, that will enable us to adopt targeted measures against transport operators of any mode of transport that engage in of facilitating smuggling or trafficking of people into the European Union,” he added.

On Tuesday, the Commission also proposed changes on the rules governing the movement of people within the bloc, giving member states the power to reintroduce border checks between countries in the Schengen travel zone system.
