France: Ex-President Hollande testifies in 2015 Paris attacks trial

France’s former President Francois Hollande testified in the trial of 14 men over the Islamist-motivated attacks of November 2015, at a Paris court on Wednesday.
Hollande was cited as a witness by the association of victims ‘Life for Paris’ and joined the trial to face questions of how the attacker escaped detection by the French and European security forces while planning and committing the attacks.
“What was important was to have the Head of State, to have someone who represents French society at the time of the events, to come and say what he knew, and also to show his compassion with regard to victims, that is also one of the things we need to hear, and that we were able to hear today, so it was important,” said President of the association ‘Life for Paris’ Arthur Denouveaux after the hearing.
“He (Francois Hollande) taught us nothing new,” said Patrick Jardin, who is the father of a victim in the Bataclan attack.
“I am not saying that he is responsible for everything, but among his ministers, there are some who bear a very heavy responsibility,” he added.
Hollande insisted during the questioning that the French security institutions did everything in their power to prevent the attack and that he would not change a thing about his own behaviour if the same circumstances occurred.
Hollande was President of the Republic when Islamic State (IS) extremists killed 130 people on 13 November 2015 in Paris after opening fires on street cafes and inside the Bataclan concert hall.

SOT, Arthur Denouveaux, President of the association ‘Life for Paris’ (French): “First, we learned that he was not targeted at the Stade de France. Because even he had only decided at the last minute to go. This is information we didn’t have. We could think he was targeted and we learned that he was not and it is important. What was also important was to have the Head of State, to have someone who represents French society at the time of the events, to come and say what he knew, and also to show his compassion with regard to victims, that is also one of the things we need to hear, and that we were able to hear today, so it was important.”

SOT, Patrick Jardin, Father of a victim of the Bataclan attack (French): “He (Francois Hollande) taught us nothing new. ‘It’s not me, I wasn’t there at the start, it’s not my fault, it’s the Belgians’ fault’. It’s never his fault. He is irreproachable. I’m sorry, but in a five-year term where there have been as many dead and as many injured by Islamist attacks, he should still ask himself the right questions. In my opinion, there must have been quite a few mistakes made. I am not saying that he is responsible for everything, but among his ministers, there are some who bear a very heavy responsibility.”

SOT, Jean Reinhart, Civil party lawyer (French): “It is true that it is difficult to understand why he (Francois Hollande) has no regrets. I think he could have reconsidered a certain number of events and elements. Very clearly, he answers very frankly and straightforwardly. It is true that the exercise is appalling because I believe that in the mind of the President, when he can understand that at one point his name was mentioned in the Bataclan, there were shots and people died afterwards. I think this must be a more than uncomfortable and difficult situation to live with.”

SOT, Philippe Dupeyron, Civil party and president of the association ‘13onze15 Fraternite et Verite’ (13eleven15 fraternity and truth) (French): “Does it help to reveal the truth? I am not convinced that there are many new facts in what we are told. In any case, it does not seem to be useless that the first man of the French State can express what he lived and the way in which he lived it.”
