Around 100 people, farmers and members of the public, gathered in downtown Nantes to denounce a biogas plant project in the town of Corcoue sur Logne, 40km south of the city, in Nantes on Tuesday.
Protesters made a mock farm on the streets of Nantes. The demonstration was complete with corn, bales of hay and cattle on display.
Farmers say the plant will reduce their income and force them to change the way they farm. The new way of framing would be more industrial with animals having less time outside.
“It urges us to not let the animals go outside, to own huge farms with animals locked in buildings so we don’t want to be part of this, and we want to remain farmers, with our cows outside and to keep producing like today,” said Guillaume, a local dairy farmer.
Three farmers spoke with authorities in the local prefecture. They sought a moratorium on the project until sufficient research has been undertaken to understand the long term effects a Biogas plant would have on the area.
SOT, Dom, CVMC Member (French): “This biogas plant will produce gas instead of food and it will consist of 200 farmers working south of Nantes, what are we going to eat then? Gas?”
SOT, Guillaume, Dairy Farmer, (French): “We’ll need to produce more, to fuel this gas plant, at the expense of farming.”
SOT Hughes, Dairy Farmer, (French): “It is for food, these agricultural areas are used to feed people. We need solutions for energy but this is an oversized project.”
SOT, Guillaume, Dairy Farmer, (French): “This system breaks the cycle, and it urges us to not let the animals go outside, to own huge farms with animals locked in buildings so we don’t want to be part of this, and we want to remain farmers, with our cows outside and to keep producing like today.”
SOT, Marie Savoy, Dairy Farmer, Co-President of the Farmer’s Confederation in Loire Atlantique (French): “The farmer’s confederation have asked for a moratorium for many years, we are not against biogas plants, but we think that France is still looking for its model of development, or at least that the actual model is not virtuous. So we ask for a moratorium, a national debate but also a local one regarding the model of development we need, one that is compatible with peasant farming. And for that we need reliable scientific data and statistics to have this debate.”
SOT, Marie Savoy, Dairy Farmer, Co-President of the Farmer’s Confederation in Loire Atlantique (French): “We also do not have any hindsight, there has been no calculations regarding the energy efficiency of this model, of cultivating soils only for a biogas plant and the energy required to do so.”
