France: Hundreds of anti-fascist protesters hit Nantes streets

Around 500 people attended an anti-fascist demonstration in Nantes on Friday.

Protesters marched through the streets, carrying burning torches, set alight effigies and vandalised a statue of French general Georges de Villebois-Mareuil.

“We’re here because the ‘Faire Bloc’ collective called for this protest against fascism and far right ideas, because the danger is crawling, we see that in the media, the politicians from the far right propagate ideas surrounding immigration and Islam that we find foul,” said Pascal Fremont a spokesperson for the local Sud Solidaire Union.

The protesters marched to a bar which is known to reportedly be a gathering place for some local far-right groups. The protesters attacked the pub leading police to intervene which led to the protest dispersing.

SOT, Pascal Fremont, Spokesperson of the “Sud Solidaire” Union (French): “We’re here as a union as well, because we can see that far-right is not on the workers’ side, the far-right wants pensions to start at 65, it doesn’t want to raise the minimum wages and doesn’t like unions in general. Far-right is not the ally of the workers.”

SOT, Vinz, Member of the Yellow Vest Movement (French): “Today we’re here, while Jean Castex, the prime minister was setting the first stone of the new hospital this morning, but we set the first stone back on the 22nd June of 2019, for Steve, and it was just facing this new hospital.”

SOT, Renz, Cofounder of Self Managed Maison Du Peuple (French): “A quick message, as we all know it, France is on a fascist path, and it’s by being on the ground like today that we fight it. When it comes to the Maison du Peuple, it’s by creating such self-managed places that we will make it, and next month we will need you all to reopen one of them.”
