Curious Parisians were seen trying out a new cooling bench concept, located in the city’s 13th arrondissement on Thursday.
The bench uses geothermal passive cooling technology with the principle of a Canadian or Provencal well, which traditionally take advantages of subsoil temperatures to either cool or warm structures above ground.
Air from Paris’ mines is used to keep the temperature of the bench down when temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit).
“We started with a concept, themed on global warming, and we (the design team) asked ourselves the question of providing a temporary solution to improve the comfort of users in the public space”, explained Emma Lelong, a member of the project’s design team.
“And so, we said to ourselves that in this period of heatwaves, bringing a little fresh air could do good, that’s it,” she added.
Reactions from residents on a 30-degree Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) day were largely positive.
“I think it’s a very good idea, especially when there are big heat peaks,” commented one resident.
The bench has been on display for the public to try out from the beginning of June and can be experienced until September 15.

SOT, Emma Lelong, Project design team member (French): “We started with a concept, themed on global warming, and we (the design team) asked ourselves the question of providing a temporary solution to improve the comfort of users in the public space. And so, we said to ourselves that in this period of heatwaves, bringing a little fresh air could do good, that’s it. Improving the welcome in town.”
SOT, Alain, Resident (French): “I think it’s a very good idea, especially when there are big heat peaks and it should, if it works well, be developed. So, it’s going to be excellent.”
SOT, Vira, Resident (French): “For now, it is not yet very hot but the stone already gives off freshness when you sit down. The system is interesting but we will have to wait when there will be even higher temperatures. Straight away, just through the act of sitting down we already sense a feeling of freshness.”
SOT, Gerard, Resident (French): “I’m fine, my buttocks are cool, so it’s quite nice, yes.”
SOT, Gerard, Resident (French): “It is linked to global warming, in addition it is still a shame to spend energy on air conditioning in general, so here, if it is natural air conditioning it is interesting, yes.”
