French university students rallied in Paris on Thursday, part of a nationwide student demonstration against a potential increase in registration fees and general student precariousness.

The protests come after French President Emmanuel Macron sparked anger by suggesting earlier in January that university access in France could not remain as it is “with no cost”, if its universities were to compete internationally.

SOT, Melanie Luce, Protester (French): “And if we are here today, it is because of several reasons. First of all, the first reason is because we are precarious, because we have been waiting for years for measures after not believing that nothing can be changed. The place teaches us next to nothing and we can’t wait. It’s not because we hear of presidential elections that we’re going to wait for what we’re asking. The second reason is because, on top of all this, being in a situation of extreme precariousness, in addition to needing of our student organisations to organise food coloring so we can die.” *ROUGH TRANSLATION*
