France: Sarkozy summoned to court for polling fraud case

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared at the Paris Court of Justice, on Tuesday, after being summoned to testify as five of his allies face charges of fraud.

Sarkozy became France’s first president to be ordered to testify as a witness in court. Benefitting from the presidential immunity, he reported on facts accomplished during his term without facing charges.

Nicolas Sarkozy, however, held silence during the hearing, explaining later that he is accountable to “the French people, not to a court”.

Among those facing charges are Patrick Buisson, the founder of a polling company and a former advisor of Sarkozy who allegedly overcharged the French government for conducting various polls reportedly earning him over €1.4 million ($1.6 million).
