France: Week of Paris attacks 7 years on - Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher

A heavy police security presence was stationed outside of Hyper Cacher kosher supermarket, a site of a former siege, and tributes were laid in memory of the victims of the Charlie Hebdo killings as Paris marked a seven year anniversary of a series of deadly attacks conducted by gunmen.

The siege at the Hyper Cacher supermarket took place on January 9, 2015 and the Charlie Hebdo attack took place just a couple of days prior, on January 7, 2015.

A further attack was also perpetrated against a police officer in a Parisian suburb on January 8, 2015.

Flowers could be seen outside the former Charlie Hebdo headquarters where a mural commemorates the killed staff of the satirical magazine.

A plaque and a sign reading ‘Freedom of Speech Square’ decorated the walls at Nicolas-Appert street number 10.

“I wanted it (the street sign) to be more general, more global on the fact that it was freedom of expression that had been assassinated and not just journalists. It’s sad to say it like that but I mean it’s not because of the journal itself. It was freedom of expression that was targeted,” said Christophe, who put up the sign in memory of the deceased.

“I find it essential to come every year to pay tribute and remember that moment,” he added.
Twelve people, including a police officer, died in the attacks on the magazine’s offices. The attack was carried out by two armed men who were later killed by security forces outside of Paris.
In December 2020, the perpetrators of the attacks were sentenced to prison terms.
