Frontline Footage: Israeli Ground Assault Advances in Gaza

Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have released new frontline footage of their ground assault in Gaza.

It is clear from the footage that the IDF are now pushing into more dense urban environments, where fighting may become much tougher. Bulldozers can be seen clearing the way for heavy armour such as tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. Armoured vehicles will be more vulnerable to attack in urban environments, than in more open spaces. As the ground forces advance, they are being supported by artillery barrages and airstrikes.

Having instructed all civilians in northern Gaza to evacuate to the south, it’s thought the IDF are now attempting to effectively cut Gaza in half. The IDF may then focus its efforts on Gaza City in the north, which it claims is a Hamas stronghold.

While hundreds of thousands of the approximately two million residents of northern Gaza have already evacuated, it is thought more than 600,000 people still remain. It has been reported that more than 100,000 displaced and injured people are sheltering in hospitals in and around Gaza City.

Some have accused Israel of targeting civilian vehicles attempting to drive south, and there is little hope of getting aid to anyone trapped in northern Gaza.

Israel has denied deliberately targeting civilians, but it claims that Hamas is using civilians as human shields, and alleges there is a Hamas command centre directly underneath Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. With Israeli airstrikes landing close to the hospitals, fears are growing for the safety of those remaining in northern Gaza.
