While his Chicago vaults were disappointingly empty in 1986, Witherell’s Auction House, along with Al Capone’s granddaughter, Diane Patricia Capone, is now deploying an auction featuring possessions from the infamous Chicago mob boss in Sacramento, California.
Under the slogan ‘A Century of Notoriety: The Estate of Al Capone,’ the auction is presenting various antiques of great value such as the gangster’s favourite gun, considered to be the highest value lot in the auction, a Colt semi-automatic pistol valued between 400 up to 700 thousand dollars.
“Billy the Kid’s gun sold last week for 6 million, so in my mind, anything under 10 million for Al Capone’s gun would be a good deal,” said Brian Witherell from Witherell’s Auction House.
“Papa called it his sweetheart because this gun protected him several times when people were trying to assassinate him. He used this gun for protection,” added Diane Patricia Capone.
In the auction, there’s also a personal letter from Al Capone to his son, Sonny Capone from Alcatraz, and various personal belongings like furniture valued up to 25,000 dollars per piece and original pictures from the businessman.
“In that letter, you can see a side of this man that the public does not know. It is a very loving letter to his son. He calls him ‘dearest son of my heart,” said Diane Patricia Capone.
The auction will take place live on Friday, October 8 at 18:00 (local time; 01:00 GMT Saturday).
