A fresh rally in support of Mikheil Saakashvili took place on Sunday outside the prison in Rustavi, where the former Georgian president is currently held.

Footage shows hundreds of people who gathered outside the jail, chanting “Misha”, holding up national flags and posters with messages in support of Saakashvili, demanding the politician’s release.

According to media reports, more than 300 people attended the rally, organised by Saakashvili’s United National Movement (UNM) party.

Opposition leaders, including UNM Rustavi mayoral candidate David Kirkitadze, addressed the protesters. He said the people are demanding that the ex-president be transferred to a civil hospital as Saakashvili has been on a hunger strike for 24 days.

Mikheil Saakashvili, who had served as President of Georgia for two consecutive terms, was detained in Georgia on October 1, shortly after announcing that he intended to return to the country from Ukraine in time for the October election.

Saakashvili was put on a domestic wanted list as he was sentenced in absentia on connections to the murder case of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valeri Gelashvili.

Authorities have repeatedly given warnings that they would detain the politician at a border crossing.
