Georgia: "More NATO in Georgia" - US and Georgia sign military training memo

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Georgian counterpart Juansher Burchuladze signed a memorandum for strengthening Georgia’s defence and deterrence capabilities in Tbilisi on Monday.

Austin said the signed paper reflects the long-term US policy of assisting Georgia, including in improving its defence capabilities. The memorandum will also help deter external aggression and advance the country towards Euro-Atlantic integration.

He called the initiative a “focal point for security cooperation between the United States Department of Defence, the Georgian Ministry of Defence, and the Georgian Defence Forces.”

“This marks an exciting new phase of bilateral security cooperation between our countries,” Austin added.

For his part, Burchuladze noted that “the importance of Georgia’s cooperation with NATO” was discussed at the meeting.

The Georgian defence minister added that the cooperation plans between the two countries will fully serve the principle of “more NATO in Georgia and more Georgia in NATO.”

The meeting with the Georgian defence minister was the start of the Pentagon chief’s European trip. Lloyd Austin will also visit Ukraine, Romania, and Belgium, US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said earlier.
