Georgia: Saakashvili supporters rally in Tbilisi as ex-pres moved to prison hospital

Hundreds of supporters of former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili held a rally calling for his release at Liberty Square, in Tbilisi, on Saturday.

Saakashvili has been transferred to a prison hospital five weeks after starting a hunger strike.

Protesters could be seen holding placards and flags as well as chanting slogans and calling for Saakashvili to be transferred to a civilian clinic, instead of a one in a prison.

According to the Georgian Special Penitentiary Service, the ex-president was transferred to the Gldani Prison Hospital, located in colony No. 18 on Monday, after the decision of the doctors’ council.

Saakashvili’s lawyer Nika Gvaramia called the situation regarding the removal of the ex-president from prison “an abduction” on his Facebook page.

“None of his human rights defenders, no family member, no doctor, and no public defender knows about his condition and location,” Gvaramia said.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova said Saakashvili had no intention of moving to prison hospital in colony No. 18, despite his deteriorating health condition, as he “believes that it is not safe for his life there.”

Saakashvili was detained on 1 October. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list for covering up the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili. He had been sentenced in absentia to three and six years’ imprisonment respectively.

Saakashvili’s says he is a political prisoner.

On November 6 the Georgian Justice Ministry’s Special Penitentiary Service published footage on Facebook showing Saakashvili eating food surrounded by doctors.
