Hundreds of supporters of former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili held a rally calling for his release outside national parliament, in Tbilisi, on Saturday.

People could be seen applauding and singing the Georgian national anthem, while Member of Parliament Nikanor Melia and other politicians addressed the rally participants.

Saakashvili was transferred from prison to hospital on Monday due to health concerns after a prolonged hunger strike, which the politician announced he had undertaken after being taken into custody.

Saakashvili was detained on 1 October. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list for covering up the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili. He had been sentenced in absentia to three and six years’ imprisonment respectively.

On November 6, the Georgian Justice Ministry’s Special Penitentiary Service published footage on Facebook showing Saakashvili eating food surrounded by doctors.
