Voters headed to polling stations as local government elections are being held in Georgia. 64 mayors of cities and more than two thousand members of the Sakrebulo, that is Tbilisi City Council, are being elected.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili was among the voters who cast their ballots in Tbilisi on Saturday.

According to the President, “local municipal elections are the most important in democratic processes,” as citizens “can choose people in cities and villages who will solve local problems.” Zurabishvili noted that she voted “for depolarisation.”

Election participant Katino Morchiladze saw the elections as an opportunity for “big changes for the country.” She also expressed hope “that the situation of people will change for the better and everything will get better.”

Ex-president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, who was detained by law enforcement officers on his arrival at home the day before, addressed citizens in an open letter with an appeal to take part in local government elections.

The press speaker of the CEC of Georgia, Natia Ioseliani, reported that the voter turnout for the municipal elections in Georgia by 15:00 (11:00 GMT) was 33.18 percent.
