German Minister of Health said at a press conference in Berlin on Friday that in future a transfer of COVID-19 patients to neighbouring countries could be necessary.

During his speech to journalists, Spahn said that in the case that intensive care bed distribution had been overloaded within the framework of the national plan, a patient transfer to neighbouring countries could be needed, and made possible. In addition, Germany had ordered a total of over 14 million vaccine doses since last week onwards for the next two weeks.

A range of possible measures to take based on the number of local hospitalisations was outlined by the government on Thursday and approved by the Bundesrat on Friday. They range from 2G rules, where businesses only admit vaccinated and recovered individuals, to more extensive restrictions on public activities.

SOT, Jens Spahn, German Minister of Health (German): “I would like to address another issue that makes the difficult situation clear, which also played a role yesterday, but not so much in the public perception - that is the necessity of transferring intensive care patients in hospitals within regions. As you know, we have divided Germany into five different regions in a so-called cloverleaf, within which patients are transferred from one hospital to the next if a corresponding critical situation arises.”

SOT, Jens Spahn, German Minister of Health (German): “Once someone is on ECMO - on oxygenation - the transfer to another hospital or even to another region is of course much greater [in difficulty] and we will be in a situation where for the first time we will have to transfer patients on a larger scale not only within a cloverleaf, a region, but nationwide in Germany, possibly also to neighbouring countries. There is close federal-state coordination on this every week.”

This week four, the week after next six million vaccine doses will be delivered, which have been ordered by the doctors’ practices, by the vaccination centres, by the vaccinating agencies in Germany.”
