‘German WWII tank SEIZED from man’s basement’

An 84-year-old man has been convicted by a German court on Tuesday of illegal weapon possession, after being found to have a personal arsenal in his basement that included a World War II-era Panther tank.

The state district in the northern city of Kiel gave the man a 14-month suspended prison sentence and has fined him 250,000 euros.

He has also been ordered to either sell the tank, or donate it to a museum or collector, within the next two years.

The tank was seized during a raid on his house in 2015 following a tip-off, which also revealed an underground garage containing a torpedo, mortars, anti-aircraft guns and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

The tank was developed in 1941 after Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. It was known for its firepower, movement and frontal armour, making it highly valuable in battle.

Many of the tanks were either destroyed during the war or were scrapped post-1945.
