German Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich with a speech on Tuesday.
“What you could see today was really impressive, and I would say it is a real quantum leap in several directions compared to the last IAA,” said Merkel.
The Chancellor appeared accompanied by security guards, including a sniffer dog. In addition to an opening speech, she spoke with representatives of the automotive industry and the press.
“Here are vehicles that really do appear on the roads, that can be bought, but also visions,” added Merkel.
The focus of this year’s IAA was sustainable and autonomous driving and the production of cars from recycled resources.
Until Sunday, nearly 700 exhibitors will present their innovations.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “What you could see today was really impressive and I would say it is a real quantum leap in several directions compared to the last IAA. Once with regard to the networking that the fair offers this time of all forms of mobility and the opening of the fair towards the city.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “There are opportunities for discussion and for trying out ecological mobility. It is a quantum leap what has happened in terms of drive technologies here, especially in the passenger car sector, of course, in the area of e-mobility. Here are vehicles that really do appear on the roads, that can be bought, but also visions. It is an implied qualitative leap in the direction of autonomous driving.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “Everyone is very motivated, I think it is also good that we keep hearing from start-ups and small companies with interesting ideas from maybe 10 or 8 years ago then today contribute to our cars built in Germany really being world class. That is why I can only wish this IAA all the best, even in times of pandemic. The IAA Mobility in Munich at the new location seems to be a very lively venture, all the best to you all in the coming days.”
