Berlin’s central train station appeared eerily quiet on Wednesday morning as a nationwide train driver union strike came into effect, leading to the cancellation of three-quarters of all long-distance trains.
Platforms remained empty as signs showed strike messages, rather than train departure times, with long queues of frustrated passengers forming at the station’s information desk.
“I can somehow understand that there is a strike, even if the reasons are a little strange,” said traveller Bernd Sankt, going on to complain that the decision should have been announced to the public further in advance.
Disgruntled traveller Regine Langenberg called the decision to strike ‘terrible’, saying she had ‘no idea’ how she would be able to reach her destination.
The strike will be held until Friday morning in protest of train driver wages, with the drivers’ union GDL demanding a 3.2 percent pay-raise as well as a one-time coronavirus bonus of €600 ($702).

SOT, Jorg and Gisine, Travellers (German): “So we can understand that the strike is here now, at least for a day. We looked yesterday. Yesterday a few trains ran here and now they are canceled.”
SOT, Bernd Sankt, Traveller (German): “I can somehow understand that there is a strike, even if the reasons are a little strange because of these trade union disputes and I always find Mr. Weselsky a little too brisk. You have to announce something in advance, but catching people here on the move from one day to the next is not possible.”
SOT, Regine Langenberg, Traveller (German): “It’s terrible to do [the strike] at this time. Of course we are affected otherwise we would not be standing in line here, we want to go to Munich and then on to Memmingen, so to Bavaria, no idea how we can get there now.”
