Police investigating forged vaccination passports have found an increasing quantity of false documents, Thomas Thieme of the State Criminal Investigation Office explained in Berlin on Tuesday.
Thieme said these documents are being sold on online marketplaces and on social media. “These falsifications are offered in general on websites such as eBay Kleinanzeigen, chat groups like WhatsApp or Telegram and we have pointers to this and through our own means and then naturally try to take action,” he said.
Thieme added that the amount of false documents in circulation seems to rise with a tightening of rules, and those numbers are expected to increase in coming weeks as 2G restrictions in Germany tighten.
However, he warned that only the vaccination booklets are currently being forged. “As far as we know it is not possible to fake a QR code and therefore our work is limited only to fake paper certificates.”
The penalty for producing the fake documents is up to a five-year prison sentence or a fine.
