The German government praised its security authorities for preventing an attack on a Hagen synagogue, during a press conference held in Berlin on Friday.

“There was according to sources of the Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia a serious threat and the authorities made sure that it could not be implemented.” German Interior Ministry spokesperson Steve Alter told the press.

The government spokesperson Steffen Seibert also underlined that the presence of Russian mercenary troops in Mali would be “of great concern” to both Germany and France. “In this regard, the message to the Malian interim government is very clear. And on this topic, Germany and France are totally in line”, said Seibert to the press.

Russian has so far denied any military presence in Mali, as well as any negotiations to send servicemen to the African country.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Steve Alter, German Interior Ministry spokesperson (German): “I would like to use this opportunity to highlight the good reactions and work of the security authorities on Wednesday and yesterday evening. There was according to sources of the Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia a serious threat and the authorities made sure that it could not be implemented.”

SOT, Steve Alter, German Interior Ministry spokesperson (German): “I can say that the asylum applicant was not applying in Germany but for every applicant the federal office for migration and refugees run a security check. If you submit an application to be heard there is a routine security check for every application and for everyone who applies for a residence permit in Germany. There are of course cases where people radicalise first in Germany after there entry so we have to move within this limits”

SOT, Maria Adebahr, German Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “So as far as questions of possible contractual arrangements from our point of view we have taken note of this initiative as far as it is public. This statement I presume stands for itself. The security partnership exists so our impression is currently in the process of being established and we have no knowledge of the exact agreements that might be concluded and therefore I do not want to make any legal assumptions of the precise in the regulations at this point. It is clear to the federal government that we attach great importance to the international rules for handling radioactive substances and we naturally assume that the initiative or the participating nations have the initiative to work together with the IAEA, who is in charge for this field.”

SOT, Steffen Seibert, German Government spokesperson (German): “Without going too much into details, that is a topic that was also discussed between Chancellor Merkel and President Macron. This is an important topic for both the French and us, that should be well coordinated. We agree that the intervention of such a mercenary group, for now there are only reports of negotiations between the Malian interim government and the Russian troops, would be of great concern. Moreover, it would certainly not bring stabilisation on site, or the perspectives of development of the people. In this regard, the message to the Malian interim government is very clear. And on this topic Germany and France are totally in line. Furthermore, we are naturally talking to our international partners which are the MINUSMA within the UN or the EUTM within the European Union, who are involved there.”
