Residents could be seen queuing for tests in Berlin on Saturday, after the government reintroduced free tests to citizens.
According to the measures outlined by health minister Jens Spahn, citizens are entitled to one free test per week, regardless of vaccination status. The free tests had been suspended in October, amid a decrease in incidence number, but they have been reintroduced from Saturday, following a surge in recorded infections.
Residents shared mixed views on the relaunching of the free tests scheme.
One resident, Tino, said “the incidence is higher than last year, the number of hospitalisations is higher, but I think people find it safer now,” whilst another, Arribert, said he thought it “doesn’t make any sense to offer civil tests when people don’t get vaccinated.”
The Berlin incidence rate (infections per 100,000 inhabitants) of the past week is 277, as of Saturday, according to the Robert Koch Institute.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Arribert, Resident (German): “Not good. Because everybody must get vaccinated. I’m vaccinated and I have to get the third boost and I think it doesn’t make any sense to offer civil tests when people don’t get vaccinated.”
SOT, Tino, Resident (German): “I find it quite good because also vaccinated people can go and get tested. Pretty good.”
SOT, Osman, Resident (German): “I think it is not enough. We have a lot to do. If you get vaccinated, why do I have to go and get tested as well?”
SOT, Tino, Resident (German): “It’s weird. The incidence is higher than last year, the number of hospitalisations is higher, but I think people find it safer now. I don’t know, I feel a bit, I don’t know, I find it weird.”
