Visitors of Berlin’s former Tempelhof airport were able to attend a ‘sheep day’ educational event co-organised by the Senate Department for the Environment, Traffic and Climate Protection on Saturday, with a focus on the importance of the animals to the area.
“There was actually always a flock of sheep that kept the large meadows short. And now it is a recreational and nature conservation area and we want to try to establish a new flock of sheep here or to see how human, nature and sheep fit together,” said Ursula Renker, spokesperson at the Senate Department for the Environment, Traffic and Climate Protection.
The project supports both the preservation of a rare breed of sheep and the ‘heraldic bird’ of the Tempelhof field, the field lark, a ground-breeding bird whose nesting process would otherwise be disturbed by mowing machines.
“A mosaic is created because they (sheep) eat better in one place or prefer one [area] over the others. And this mosaic is exactly what the field lark needs, it has decking where it can build its nests but it also has take-off and landing areas.” it has decking where it can build its nests, but it also has take-off and landing areas,” explained sheep farmer Frank Wasem.
Wasem also highlighted the lowered carbon footprint aspect in the field maintenance process when using sheep to graze on the vegetation, as opposed to mowing machinery.
Around 80 sheep have been living permanently on the field of Tempelhof airport since 2019 to protect the fauna and flora in the five-year pilot project.
The initiative is a joint campaign by the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, Grun Berlin GmbH, Allmende Kontor, 100% ThF, House 104 and the Tempelhof field coordination.
