Germany’s iconic New National Gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie) is set to reopen on Sunday, August 22, after a six-year renovation period, as announced at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
The newest exhibition will feature three art formats, including Alexander Calder’s sculptures from the 1970s on the main floor, a contemporary video art installation by Rosa Barba, and the existing classical collection titled ‘The Art of Society.’
” We wanted to reflect that the collection of the ‘Nationalgalerie’ shows the strong reference to sociopolitical issues,” said Joachim Jaeger, the head of the Neue Nationalgalerie adding that “many issues that were negotiated 100 years ago - topics like marginalisation and poverty, political agitation, fleeing and exile, networks of art-dealing - are topics that have been staying red-hot.’‘

SOT, Michael Eissenhauer, General Director for the State Museums of Berlin (German): “For my generation the building, since its opening in 1968, iconically represents a never before seen spirit of optimism for tolerance and candidness.’‘
SOT, Michael Eissenhauer, General Director for the State Museums of Berlin (German): “It could remind us and encourage us to look for common points of contact despite differences and despite disputes and to conduct discussions with clarity, with candidness and with honesty. To me, this is what the Neue Nationalgalerie stands for, this location and the spirit of this building.’‘
SOT, Joachim Jaeger, Head of Neue Nationalgalerie (German): “The collection hall, which is structured to be more introvert, it is more about a historical reflection and deconstruction. We not only show the collection of classical modernism but also invoke a lot of questions with it.’‘
SOT, Joachim Jaeger, Head of Neue Nationalgalerie (German): “With the title ‘The Art of Society’ we wanted to reflect, that the collection of the ‘Nationalgalerie’ shows the strong reference to sociopolitical issues. Especially since in Berlin the political relations have always been being clearly felt, led to two national galleries in two city districts with two completely different perspectives of collecting, a collection was achieved that is extraordinary.’‘

SOT, Joachim Jaeger, Head of Neue Nationalgalerie (German): “Today, I want to direct the focus on the three formats that we are opening today - the reference with Calder to the 70s, a very contemporary view with Rosa Barba and a very long reference to the Weimar Republic with the classical modernism. I can add, that [we made this selection] very consciously shortly before an election in which we debate and think about society and politics.’‘
