Germany: Ceremony commemorates 140 victims of Berlin Wall on its 60th anniversary

A public commemoration ceremony was held on Friday along the Berlin Wall strip in Hohen Neuendorf to mark the 60th anniversary, with the participation of the Governing Mayor of Berlin Michael Muller and Dietmar Woidke, the Minister-President of the state of Brandenburg.

“One hundred and forty people who died because the border regime of the GDR showed itself here in all its inhumanity,” said Dietmar Woidke.

Symbolically 140 empty chairs were set up to commemorate the at least 140 people who had died or been shot between 1961 and 1989 as they attempted to escape the GDR. The commemoration was held right next to a border tower on the Wall Trail.

Top politicians Woidke and Muller, both from the SPD party who were present, read out the names of the victims on stage, while students placed the names of the victims as signs on the empty chairs.
“We hear the names of all those who gave their lives at the Wall in very different, but always tragic ways,” Woidke added.

It was announced that the event would be followed by films and discussions to commemorate all aspects of German separation.
