Clean-up work continued in the town of Ahrweiler on Tuesday in the wake of the previous week’s devastating flooding. Firefighters and volunteers were busy collecting up damaged goods and debris from the streets for disposal. Cranes and other heavy machinery were also brought in to help with cleaning up the remains of ruined buildings as well as cars destroyed in the floods. At least 62 people are thought to have died in the area, while local authorities warn that many more are still missing. In total over 160 people have died as a result of the floods in western Germany, while thousands have been left without homes, power, access to water. With bridges and roads swept away and destroyed in flooded areas, transportation also remains difficult, with parts of the telecommunications network knocked out as well. The government has pledged to provide swift aid to help rebuild communities, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel also saying that the events demonstrated more action needed to be taken to combat climate change and its impacts.
