Members of the German ‘traffic light’ coalition parties, who are negotiating to form a new government, aim to wrap up the talks in the coming week, stated participants of the talks in Berlin, on Tuesday, adding that a new chancellor could be elected as early as in the first week of December.

Speaking at a press conference, SPD Secretary-General Lars Klingbeil said, “We are ambitioned, and we want the chancellor to be elected in the week after Nicolaus [German tradition celebrated on 6 December], so that the new government can start its work straight away,’ with Green party representative Michael Kellner adding “We are aiming to agree on a coalition agreement within the next week.”

Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD), the Green Party and the Free Democrats (FDP) have been in coalition talks to form a new government since October 21. If conducted successfully, the new German government will consist of members from all three parties.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Michael Kellner, Green Party spokesperson (German): “We now had a phase where the working group has intensively worked, and we looked at the results and since yesterday we discussed the results in a very good, a very constructive and I believe in a very thorough atmosphere, Thoroughness goes before speediness, that means we are continuing the consultations today, tomorrow and on Friday.”

SOT, Michael Kellner, Green Party spokesperson (German): “And we are aiming to agree on a coalition agreement within the next week.”

SOT, Volker Wissinger, head of FDP in Rhineland-Palatinate (German): “There are busy days behind us, as party secretary generals we revealed the results of the working groups and drafted a text which we have been discussing since yesterday in the negotiating committee.”

SOT, Volker Wissinger, head of FDP in Rhineland-Palatinate (German): “We conducted the talks with a great deal of detail, as it was necessary to clarify many questions. We conducted the talks very thoroughly and constructively, with a great sense for responsibility for the matter.”

SOT, Volker Wissinger, head of FDP in Rhineland-Palatinate (German): “It is a feat of strength when three different partners have to discuss and bring together so many different issues across society.”

SOT, Lars Klingbeil , Secretary General of SPD (German): “I hope you understand that we renounce cheering pictures on the balcony and that we also said that we want to talk to each other confidentially. We want to bring the three different party programs and conflicts that exist, together.”

SOT, Lars Klingbeil , Secretary General of SPD (German): “Of course, there are still conflicts we have to talk about intensively in the last few days, but I am firmly convinced that we will manage this. But it is quite a stretch when three parties are moving to get together.”

SOT, Lars Klingbeil , Secretary General of SPD (German): “We are ambitioned, and we want that the chancellor is elected in the week after Nicolaus [German tradition celebrated on 6 December], so that the new government can start its work straight away.”
