Multiple arrests and violent clashes between police and protesters marked the COVID-sceptics rally in Berlin on Sunday.

Protests took place in Berlin despite a ban on several demonstrations. A Berlin court banned multiple protests planned for the weekend, with affected events, including huge rallies planned by the Querdenken movement as well as others in support of Berlin’s club scene, citing concerns over the spread of the Delta variant.

Germany has eased most of the restrictions this summer, but some are still in place - such as mandatory mask-wearing in the public transport and indoor spaces - as according to the Robert Koch Institute, the fourth wave of the pandemic has already begun in the country.

The German government said on Sunday the number of new cases could soar to 100,000 a day in about two months unless many more people get vaccinated, while those who decide not to may face restrictions.

More than 91,000 people have died in Germany with COVID-19.
