German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Andrea Sasse stated on Friday that in some practical questions such as airport use and humanitarian help, “we are dependent on cooperation with the Taliban.”

“When we talk about dialogue with the Taliban,” she said at a federal press conference in Berlin, “it is also about the expectations we now have from the new power in Kabul, namely that we expect they respect human rights, respect women’s rights.”

She also commented on calls from the FDP to disclose information, reportedly on the situation in Afghanistan, that elements of the German government allegedly received on August 6, days before Kabul fell to the Taliban.

Sasse said, “this report contains content from confidential conversations and must be kept confidential.”

SOT, Andrea Sasse, German Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “For example, it is about solving the practical question of the continued operation of the airport in Kabul, we are dependent on cooperation with the Taliban for this. Of course, dialogue with the Taliban is here necessary. Of course, it is also about the expectations we now have from the new power in Kabul, namely that we expect they respect human rights, respect women’s rights, that they do not make Afghanistan a new terrorism spot, that they have to meet all these expectations of inclusive government. And that is what it is all about when we talk about dialogue with the Taliban.”

SOT, Dr. Olaf Deutschbein, German Ministry for economic cooperation and development, spokesperson (German): “I think it also helps to take a closer look at the various instruments because that is often together. In the first case, there is state cooperation, i.e. classic cooperation between two governments. This form of state development cooperation is suspended for the time being. As the colleague said there are clear issues such as the safety of employees, respect of human rights, but also forming a legitimate government we can work with. This form of cooperation is suspended. Other talks are further performed in analogue way. Regarding the aid in neighbouring countries, this form of cooperation continues, because these countries can expect that Afghans will continue fleeing there.”

SOT, Andrea Sasse, German Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “We are aware about the report you mentioned and about the calls from the political environment. This report contains content from confidential conversations and must be kept confidential because the interlocutor has expressly asked for confidentiality. Even the disclosure of the content to a limited group of people with the secret protection, for example of the Bundestag, does not meet the confidentiality requirements and welfare of the State. So it’s not possible unless the classification of the report will be changed.”

SOT, David Helmbold, German Defence Ministry spokesperson (German): “Yes, at yesterday’s Defence Ministers’ meeting in Slovenia, Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer expressed a very clear position on questions of European defense capabilities. First of all, she warns of a split between the EU and NATO during the discussion. She said that if we now become stronger in Europe, the whole western alliance will be stronger. And the Minister went beyond the question of a reaction force. She said the question is not whether we are building an extra EU force, the military capabilities are available in the EU states, the debate should not be carried out on a meta-level, but it is important that we define what that means in concrete terms in order to really be ready to act on the European level. The central point of the Defense Minister is thus the ability to act and at the same time the strengthening of the EU defence capability without causing a split between the EU and NATO.”

SOT, Sebastian Gulde, Health Ministry spokesperson (German): “Basically, this change implies that the vaccination status query can actually take place, but that this is then really only used to organize work processes within the company, for example, to organize schedules. Only this is only regulated by this change.”

SOT, Sebastian Gulde, Health Ministry spokesperson (German): “As I said, the vaccination itself remains voluntary and there are no consequences under labor law if someone decides not to be vaccinated. And it goes without saying it will stay so and that the labor law gives protection if there are any violations. But in principle this measure serves only the organized work processes.”
