Germany: Dozens rush to Cologne cathedral for Xmas Eve vaccinations

Dozens of residents were queueing outside of Cologne’s Catherdral on Christmas Eve to participate in a vaccination campaign at the Dreikonigssaal, as seen on Friday.

More people than expected by the organisers showed up to receive their jabs at the famous church.
In the morning, a small line formed, which gradually grew over the day. According to a cathedral spokesperson, up to 500 vaccination doses were available for the campaign.

“I think we can do something so that our society can grow back together again,” said Church Provost Guido Assman during the campaign.

“I believe that we, as the Cologne Cathedral and the catholic church, can make a very good contribution to making this possible again. And that is why I am very much in favour of many people getting vaccinated,” added Assman.

“We waited a long time, but then the vaccination itself went very quickly, and it was very pleasant inside. The people were very nice, and I am glad that I am vaccinated for the third time,” said Anna, a Cologne resident, after getting her shot.

The newly elected German government has set a goal to administer 30 million dosages by the end of the year. 28 of the 30 million vaccine doses targeted by the end of the year have been inoculated, according to Major General Breuer, head of the pandemic crisis team.

I think we can do something so that our society can grow together again, that old people don’t get lonely, because they are not allowed and cannot receive visitors because of the infection risk. Young people who cannot experience many things in their youth because they simply cannot meet due to Corona. That this is socially possible again. I believe that we, as the Cologne Cathedral and the catholic church, can make a very good contribution to making this possible again. And that is why I am very much in favour of many people getting vaccinated. Because our society is suffering from the fact that we have had to give up many things socially in the past months and probably in the coming weeks and months as well.”

SOT, Resident (German): “I got Biontech today and thank goodness I am happy to have it now, the booster shot. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and that they stay healthy.”
