A 70-metres-tall (230 feet) motorway bridge near Wilnsdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia was destroyed on Sunday morning, marking a new record in Germany for the tallest bridge ever to be detonated by demolition specialists.
Captured by drone, the Rinsdorf viaduct along Germany’s A45 autobahn was brought down by 120 kilograms (265 pounds) of explosives. First, its 16 support bearings caved in, quickly followed by the motorway’s surface collapsing to the ground.
The fall was carried out so that the explosion would not damage its adjacent replacement bridge, inaugurated in December 2021.
The older structure was built 55 years ago and destroyed at 11:00 am local time (10:00 am GMT). The destroyed bridge is just one of more than 60 viaducts that need urgent repair or replacement in North Rhine-Westphalia. Another 15 are currently under construction or scheduled to be repaired in 2022.
