A solid gold avocado bagel valued at €2.5 million ($2.95 million) is one of the highlights of Berlin Art Week, as seen on Friday at Berlin’s Avocado Club restaurant.

The artwork, called “Who wants to live forever?”, is the latest piece by German artist Tim Bengel and consists of 27 individual pieces of 18-karat gold with a total value of €300,000 ($354,000).

According to Bengel, the aim of the artwork is to “capture the zeitgeist of our generation”

“There is no better symbol than avocado, a fruit that has become a thing because of the whole of social media hype,” he went on saying, explaining one of the bagel’s many layers of symbolism.

The life-size sculpture was based on a real bagel that was 3D-scanned to create the shapes, which were then bathed in gold by the team of sculptors with “about 10 kilos of liquid gold,” according to the artist.

After Berlin Art Week, the golden piece of art will be shown in other exhibitions in Miami and possibly in the UK and even Russia, while the artist, with the help of Galerie Rother will negotiate with potential buyers.

The price is non-negotiable and will not be auctioned, gallerist Christian Rother said.

Berlin Art Week runs until Sunday, September 19.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Tim Bengel, Artist and creator of golden bagel (German): “A pumpkin bagel goes first, then the first level is five slices of tomato, then come rocket leaves, there are ten well-polished rocket leaves, then come five slices of avocado, between you can also see onion rings, onion rings of different sizes, five pieces, and on top comes the pumpkin seed Bagel. And every time it looks a little different, there’s no perfect plan, sometimes something falls out of it, like avocado this time.”

SOT, Tim Bengel, Artist and creator of golden bagel (German): “Well the question that I asked myself while creating the work of art is how do you capture the zeitgeist of our generation, the one of millennials. And for me there is no better symbol than avocado, a fruit that has become a thing because of the whole of social media hype. And to catch the zeitgeist I did an avocado bagel, just like the one you just consumed but poured in gold, and thus you try to freeze the zeitgeist.”

SOT, Tim Bengel, Artist and creator of golden bagel (German): “This avocado bagel is based on an actual avocado bagel, that I made with tomato slices, onion rings, rocket and avocado slices, and then we 3-D scanned each part and basing on 3D data we prepared the forms and poured them with about 10 kilogram of liquid gold. Then we hand-polished each part so it’s as shiny as it is now, and so we created the most expensive avocado bagel in the world.”

SOT, Tim Bengel, Artist and creator of golden bagel (German): “The piece of art is available for sale for 2,5 million euros, it contains gold for 300,000 euros alone, plus the whole production and manufactures, which normally work with Bugatti and Rolls Royce, make it quite expensive.”

SOT, Christian Rother, Gallerist: “We have it on display now in the context of Berlin Art Week until Sunday, and after that we plan to certainly go to Art Miami at the end of the year, we have talks going on with other museums, so it might be popping up here and there, maybe in the UK, maybe even in Russia, maybe even back again in Germany, it’s going to be very exciting, we hope to show as many people as possible this most valuable avocado bagel.”

SOT, Christian Rother, Gallerist: “We aim for this avocado bagel to become icon of our generation, ours, Tim’s and mine, as the millennial generation, because it really has a lot of deep thoughtful aspects within it, talking about pros and cons of avocado, talking about the fast pace movement that we grew up in or got used to.”
