Germany: Extinction Rebellion activists call for climate action at Berlin rally

Hundreds of environmental activists gathered near Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on Monday for a sit-down protest as part of civil disobedience campaign ‘August Rise Up’ organised by the the Extinction Rebellion group.

Protesters displayed banners with messages such as “36 degrees and it will still get warmer” while several of them could be seen with their hands glued to the asphalt. Officers started removing activists after issuing an order to clear the road.

“We are blocking the road here today to bring attention to the climate crisis, because we are already seeing the consequences of it here in Germany as well. And we think the government is not doing enough to prepare us for it or to even moderate it,” said a protester.

“I think we have to be disobedient, we have to take to the streets and we have to say what doesn’t suit us and through that, to force the politicians to do something,” said another activist.
Demonstrators believe the government is not doing enough to avoid the ‘climate catastrophe’.

SOT, Protester (German): “For example, they are blocking the extension of renewal energies here, which plays a key role to get Germany climate neutral as soon as possible.”

SOT, Protester (German): “For years, they were speaking about climate protection, and there are constantly new concepts being developed, but which don’t bring anything in the end.”

SOT, Protester (German): “I think we have to be disobedient, we have to take to the streets and we have to say what doesn’t suit us and through that, force the politicians to do something.”
