Members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Green party announced plans to appoint Germany’s new chancellor in early December, as the first round of coalition talks kicked off in Berlin on Thursday.
SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil stated that the coalition contract between the three parties, nicknamed the ‘Traffic Light Coalition’, is due to be finalised in November.
Klingbeil went on to express hope that SPD leader Olaf Scholz would be appointed as Germany’s new chancellor in ‘Saint Nicholas Week’, referring to the week of December 6.
Michael Kellner, Federal Managing Director for the Green Party, described the plans to form a coalition government as a ‘complex endeavour’ but expressed confidence that the ongoing talks would be successful.

SOT, Lars Klingbeil, General Secretary for the SPD (German): “I would say we are all excited, the atmosphere is good, but we also know what the responsibility is when holding a meeting with three parties, to begin and finish with coalition talks successfully [and] fast.’‘

SOT, Lars Klingbeil, General Secretary for SPD (German): “Today we begin, on Wednesday the task forces began, and on November 10 the task forces will have finished. Then, at the end of November [we expect] the coalition contract [to be complete], and [hope that] the goal that was just mentioned, to appoint Olaf Scholz as federal chancellor in Saint Nicholas Week, [will be realised].’‘

SOT, Volker Wissing, General Secretary for FDP (German): “It’s ambitious but we want to show the ability to act, and with the support of the successful exploratory talks we are confident to achieve this ambitious timeline.”

SOT, Volker Wissing, General Secretary for FDP (German): “We have a great intuition to determine conflict areas, and therefore we must tackle them directly and solve those. It’s not useful to kick controversial things down the road.’‘

SOT, Michael Kellner, Federal Managing Director for Green Party (German): “It is a complex endeavour, surely there will be some difficulties, I’d be surprised if not, but I am sure that these coalition talks will be successful just like the exploratory talks. And therefore the Green Party has the first chance to be part of the federal government in 16 years.’‘
